The Light Within

Nothing can dim the light which shines from within. – Maya Angelou

Usually when I read a quote from Maya Angelou, I’m filled with ideas to write about.  This time, not so much, but I don’t think it’s because of the quote, I think it’s because of me.  I’ve been feeling kind of ambivalent lately, in fact, not only is my inner light not shining, I’m not even 100% positive I have a light bulb in there.  It’the light withins not a great feeling, but here’s the thing.  It’s a feeling I have, I’m acknowledging it, and I’m moving on.  I’m working quite hard to not dwell on the fact that I’m lacking the light from within right now.

These feelings happen, and while it would be great if that light were never dimmed, I have to disagree with Ms. Angelou, the light can indeed be dimmed, but it’s up to us to power through whatever is bringing us down and come out on the other side.  Sometimes we can do it alone, and sometimes we need help.  Right now, I’m in the glumps (gloomy dumps), and to me, I believe it is important to accept your moods, and not deny them.  That seems quite unhealthy to me.  So while I am in this glumpy mood, and my inner light is dimmed here is what I am doing to get out of it.  I’m trying to get plenty of rest, I’m dusting off my feel good play list, I’m re-reading a book that always makes me feel good, and watching episodes of funny shows like The Big Bang Theory.

None of these things are big, nor are they had to do, but they are doing their part to help keep that inner light lit, and I know that in a few days, I’ll be back on track to a more cheerful state of mind, and that inner light will come shining through like a beacon.  So while I love and respect Maya Angelou, I’ll respectfully disagree with her quote.  Sometimes the light within does dim, but you have the power to bring it back to full strength.
