Spoiler-Free Summary

Bonds of Slavery is Book 1 in the Chainmark Series.

What if modern America legalized slavery again? In Bonds of Slavery, prison inmates are given a horrifying choice: serve their sentence behind bars or sign a slave contract, becoming someone else’s legal property until their sentence is bonds of slaverycomplete.

Sixteen-year-old Ryan has spent his entire life overcoming impossible odds. Raised by his beloved Nonna after being born addicted to drugs, he’s a gifted linguist who speaks multiple languages, excels in school, loves basketball, parkour, and dreams of a better future. After his Nonna’s death, however, one terrible decision made by his abusive older brother changes everything, landing Ryan in adult prison and forcing him into an impossible choice.

In prison, Ryan is forced to endure sexual abuse first from his cellmate and then from others. After several trips to the infirmary, the doctor their convinces Ryan that his better option is to sign a slave contract rather instead of remaining in prison

Believing slavery might be safer than prison, Ryan signs the contract. Instead, he finds himself trapped in a nightmare under the control of a sadistic Texas ranch owner whose goal is complete domination rather than rehabilitation. Don’t look up, don’t speak are the rules that Ryan must live by in order to survive. And Wilkins, his owner is not afraid to use the belt, the strap, the whip or the switch.

What I Loved

Ryan is an incredible protagonist. Despite everything life throws at him, he never loses the intelligence, determination, and humanity that make him so easy to root for.

One of my favorite aspects of the novel is Ryan’s gift for languages. His internal thoughts shift between Italian, Spanish, German, Greek, and Russian depending on his emotional state, with translations provided throughout. It’s a fascinating storytelling device that gives readers a deeper understanding of Ryan’s mindset while making him feel wonderfully unique.

Charley Mayne also deserves credit for handling extremely difficult subject matter with restraint. The novel never shies away from showing the brutality of Ryan’s circumstances, but it doesn’t rely on graphic descriptions to make its point. Instead, the emotional impact comes from Ryan’s resilience and determination to survive.

The story also raises uncomfortable questions about justice, punishment, power, and what happens when society dehumanizes people in the name of the law.

Final Thoughts

This is not an easy book to read, nor is it meant to be. It’s heartbreaking, unsettling, and often difficult to put down because you become so invested in Ryan’s survival. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

If you enjoy thought-provoking dystopian fiction that explores difficult moral questions while delivering unforgettable characters, Bonds of Slavery is absolutely worth reading.
