PART THIRTY-SIX:

“Alone at last,” said Genevieve alluringly as she gave Lupin a “come hither” look, complete with batting eyelashes.

“My dear,” said Lupin innocently. “I wonder if your intentions are chaste.”

“Anything but,” replied Genevieve mischievously. She slowly strutted over to him and teasingly played with the toggle on his robes. “I’ll admit, I’m thinking very wayward thoughts right now. Perhaps I need to be taught a lesson.” She winked at him and unfastened the toggle.

*****

Waking up in the warm embrace of Remus Lupin made Genevieve feel about as safe and secure as she could ever feel. She glanced out of the window and noticed it was still nighttime. A faint glow illumined the room – the gibbous moon was in its first quarter – and Genevieve realized suddenly how the next phase would affect Lupin, but even that thought didn’t change the comfortable feeling she had just from being wrapped up in his arms.

She nestled in closer to him and rested her head against his bare chest. His slow, steady breathing lulled her and she felt herself drifting back into a peaceful slumber, but she felt a deep inhalation break the rhythm of his breathing and she was jogged back from her respite. His body shifted slightly and he glanced down at Genevieve and asked, in a voice that was groggy, “Are you awake?”

“Mm-hmm,” replied Genevieve. “I hope I didn’t wake you.”

“Maybe you did,” he said as he grazed his fingers nimbly across her mouth. “But I don’t mind.” He kissed her forehead delicately and she cooed her approval. “Tell me,” he said softly. “Since we didn’t, er – talk – much earlier …”

Genevieve was glad the room was dark as she felt herself blushing a hot crimson.

“Have you been remembering anything since you’ve started your sessions with the mediwizard? Have they been useful at all?”

“They have been,” Genevieve confirmed. “Things from when I was young have started to come back to me. Some images are hazy, but the mediwizard said that wasn’t uncommon for early memories anyhow, so there’s nothing to worry about there. I guess I’m just anxious to have some sharper images back is all.”

“So, what kinds of things have you recalled?” asked Lupin curiously.

“Hmm,” pondered Genevieve. “I’ve remembered my parents – Dr. Montgomery tells me they’re non-magic.”

“That’s right,” said Lupin. “Your parents are Muggles. Do you remember anything specific?”

“My mother’s name is Marguerite and I remember her taking me to piano lessons at another lady’s house in the afternoons – we’d walk down the footpath from our house to hers and I’d hum the pieces I’d practiced as I strolled beside her.”

“What about your father?”

Genevieve furrowed her brow as she tried to recall an exact memory of her father. “His name is Gustave,” she began. “I called him Papa when I was very small.” She paused for a moment. “He was the first one to notice I was … different.”

Lupin was keen to keep her memories coming, so he inquired further. “What happened?”

She thought hard for a moment, and then shook her head. “I can’t remember that much,” she said. “I just feel sure it was him.”

“It’s all right,” he said, stroking her hair soothingly. “I’m pleased you’re remembering things at all. It makes it worthwhile that you’re here.”

“Almost,” she said with a heavy sigh. She caressed his face in her hands and casually met her mouth with his, which was waiting for her eagerly. “I don’t want the sun to rise,” she said dolefully as their kiss ended. “Then you’ll have to leave and I’ll break to pieces without you here.”

“You won’t,” he assured her. “You’re strong. You’ll do fine.”

They lay there in silence for a time and Genevieve reflected on what Lupin had said. Was she that strong? Would she be able to handle not seeing him after the amazing twelve hours they just spent together? She didn’t want to have to consider whether she would or not. She just wished she could leave with him when he departed – to slip under the invisibility cloak with him and leave the hospital forever. She tried to convince herself this was reasonable by claiming that since some of her memories had returned, it wouldn’t take long for a barrage of new ones to follow. She rationalized that the mediwizard had done his part to get the stream of memories flowing again and his usefulness in the process had passed. It was just too bad she didn’t really believe half of her rationalizations. She just wished she could leave with him in the morning.

What she didn’t realize, however, is that you should be careful what you wish for.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART THIRTY-SEVEN:

The sun was rising, even though Genevieve yearned for it not to. Her perfect night was nearly over and soon it would be time for Lupin to go. She clamped her eyes shut and imagined it was still nighttime and that they still had hours ‘til dawn instead of seconds. The twittering of a bird on the windowsill nudged her back to reality. Her eyes popped back open and the sunlight streaming through the slats of the blinds confirmed that a new day had indeed begun, whether she wanted it to or not.

Her head was snuggled securely under Lupin’s chin and her arms and legs were entwined with his. His chest was warm against her cheek and his regular breathing told her was still asleep. I hate to wake him, she thought. We have a couple more hours until Snape arrives. There’s no rush. For a time she lay there in the radiance of the morning light and simply relished the feel of him next to her. Then she thought, I wonder if I know a spell to suspend time. That would be useful right about now.

She sighed and Lupin began to stir. “Good morning,” he said as he untangled his arms to stretch them.

“That’s a matter of opinion,” said Genevieve sullenly. “How can it be good if I have to say good-bye to you in just a little while?”

“You make an excellent point,” he replied as he massaged the area of her back between her shoulder blades. “Perhaps we ought to make the best of our time, then,” he suggested as he probed her skin with his deft hands.

Genevieve couldn’t resist. After all, it was a far better plan than sulking.

*****

She could have easily spent the whole day in bed with him, but moments were slipping away quickly and she knew the time had come to face up to the fact that it was time to say farewell.

And then it happened – the first of a series of events that put the rest of the day into a tailspin.

As Genevieve was enjoying her last moment in Lupin’s embrace, she heard the doorknob on the hospital room door jiggle. The both sat upright in the bed and Genevieve eyed the invisibility cloak, which had been carelessly discarded on the floor the evening before.

Oh, why didn’t we make sure it was closer by? she thought frantically.

Lupin was recklessly trying to free himself from the snarl of bed linens that were twisted around he and Genevieve as the door opened and a plump witch walked in.

“Why was your door bolted?,” Nurse Camilla started to say, her wand in hand, but she stopped short when she the man next to Genevieve. Her mouth gaped open and she stared at them, flabbergasted.

“Ohh,” was the only thing she managed to say as Genevieve grabbed a blanket, wrapped it around herself and pushed the door shut, as not to attract the attention of anyone in the neighboring rooms.

“Please,” she pleaded to the nurse. “ Please don’t turn him in!”

“Y-you – must – be – R-remus,” she stammered, still looking completely dumbfounded. “What were you thinking?” she gasped as she turned to Genevieve.

“I’m begging you,” continued Genevieve.

“Get him out of here quickly,” said Camilla in a nervous voice. “Before Magnus finds out.”

“Thank you,” replied Genevieve appreciatively. “Oh, thank you so much!”

“ Quickly!” said Camilla. “Magnus is already out and about this morning. It isn’t safe!” She swiftly left the hospital room and Genevieve and Lupin dressed in haste.

Lupin grabbed the invisibility cloak and concealed himself beneath it and Genevieve led him towards the ground floor of the hospital, hoping and praying that Snape was already there.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART THIRTY-EIGHT:

When they reached the ground floor corridor, Genevieve thought they were home free. A clock that hung on the wall of the corridor read 7:47 AM.

Snape should be arriving any minute now, Genevieve thought with relief. She felt behind her to make sure Lupin was still nearby. She touched his unseen hand and squeezed it, verifying his proximity. She sighed, thinking that everything would soon be OK.

But the thudding of heavy footfalls behind them told her that the feeling of relief was premature. She held her breath and slowly turned around to see who was approaching.

Magnus.

Oh, damn, she thought. She could feel the sweat beading up on her forehead and she heard Lupin’s feet – barely audible – shuffling aside as the hospital administrator approached.

“What are you doing down here this early in the morning?” he inquired gruffly.

Genevieve couldn’t come up with a reply. She just stared at him densely.

“And I just saw your nurse, girl,” he added in an abrupt voice. “She looked downright ruffled.” He scowled at her accusingly. “What are you up to?”

Genevieve looked nervously at the entrance doors in the reception area. Come on, Snape, she though desperately -- Any minute now.

Magnus’ eyes slowly turned to the area behind Genevieve, where Lupin stood frozen under the guise of the invisibility cloak.

Damn, damn, damn, thought Genevieve hysterically.

“You clever girl,” said Magnus cunningly. He reached his hand slowly towards where Lupin stood and Genevieve shouted out wildly.

“ RUN!”

There was no use trying to play it off. If she had waited a split second longer, it might have been too late. Hidden feet beat the ground as they sprinted towards the doors. Genevieve made her mind up in an instant to follow. Magnus’ roar could be heard behind them.

Lupin’s invisible form thrust itself onto the entrance doors just as Magnus had shot the Impedimenta Curse at them – Genevieve tumbled out after him, narrowly missing being hit with the hex herself.

She stumbled for a moment, trying to locate him and hissed in an undertone, “Remus, where are you?”

“Here,” the disembodied voice said as he grabbed her arm and pulled her under the cloak with him.

She stared desperately into his gray-green eyes and began to sob. He pulled her in close and held her for a moment, then said, “We’ve got to get away from here. They’re starting to search the grounds.”

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART THIRTY-NINE:

Genevieve and Lupin sprinted across the grounds of the hospital as a number of mediwizards, followed closely by Ulysses Magnus, started to spread out across the property to conduct a search. Magnus barked out orders to the mediwizards to hunt high and low for Genevieve and her suspected companion.

Magnus’s barking voice grew indistinct as they got further away. Finally, they took shelter in the woods that surrounded St. Mungo’s. They both took a moment to catch their breath, then Lupin looked at Genevieve and asked, “Do you remember how to apparate?”

She gave him an apologetic look and shook her head. “I don’t think so. I haven’t been allowed to try any magic since I came here. I’m only taking everyone’s word that I can even do anything remotely magical.”

“OK,” said Lupin, the frustration apparent in his tone. “Time for Plan B.”

“What’s Plan B?” asked Genevieve, holding a pain in her side.

“More running,” said Lupin. “It won’t take them long to get to the woods, but with the cloak we have the upper hand. It’s difficult to catch what you can’t see.”

“All right,” said Genevieve reluctantly, now rubbing the ache. “Let’s go.”

The two dashed through the overgrowth in the woods less than agilely, tripping over tree roots and tangling their limbs in the trailing plants that carpeted the forest. More than a dozen times, Lupin had to readjust the invisibility cloak, which had begun to slip out of place as they tried to keep a steady pace.

The woods became denser as they traveled deeper into them. Strange noises could be heard from all around them and Genevieve became more than a little nervous when a Bowtruckle fell from a tree she’d run too close to. Its long fingers scratched at her with sharp claws out of sheer annoyance from being startled from its spot on the tree, but Lupin rendered it harmless with a flick of his wand and they continued on.

They stopped in a small clearing to catch their breath again after having run about a kilometer.

“Can’t – run – anymore,” gasped Genevieve. “Too – tired.”

Lupin's breathing was labored as well so he took a moment to collect himself, and then said to her, “You should have never followed me out of the hospital. You should have stayed put. It’s not safe out here for you.”

“I didn’t know what else to do,” she said. “I just - reacted.”

“You should let them find you. I could shoot out sparks from my wand and they could locate you - I could be far, far away from here by the time they get to you.”

“And where would you go?” asked Genevieve anxiously. “I’m sure Magnus has informed the precious Ministry that there’s been a werewolf breach at St. Mungo’s and the disposal committee has surely been notified. You can’t very well stroll back into Hogwarts, can you?”

“Magnus didn’t see me,” said Lupin. “It’s his word against yours if you go back.”

”No, Magnus didn’t see you, but the nurse did. All it's going to take is a few drops of that truth serum like I had and she’ll be spilling the beans. Then you’re done for.” She looked at him in desperation. “I’m not going back there. You’re stuck with me.”

Defeated, Lupin nodded. “I guess I am,” he said as he touched her face softly, wiping the mixture of perspiration and tears from her cheek. “I’m going to have to do a four points spell. I think I’m a little turned around. I thought there was a village on the other side of these woods – we can take a rest there and maybe find some food, before we move on.”

Genevieve was anxious to find their way out of the woods. She was not only tired and hungry – the woods gave her a terribly eerie feeling inside.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART FORTY:

The four points spell was a success and Lupin safely navigated them to the edge of the woods, where a small village was visible just a short distance away.

“I wish we could take this cloak off,” muttered Genevieve, who was feeling quite suffocated from being under it so long and after such a rough journey.

“We can’t,” said Lupin. “I’m sure Magnus ordered someone to apparate into this village the moment he started the search party. This is the nearest township to the hospital. And besides, there are Muggles in the village. I dare say I’d stand out like a sore thumb,” he said as he looked down at his tattered wizard’s robes. “While we’re here, I’ll see if I can’t find something more appropriate to wear, to blend in with Muggle culture.” He looked at Genevieve, whose face was suddenly looking very pallid. “But first, we’ll see about finding some food.”

The two walked into the village, safely concealed from sight by the invisibility cloak, and made their way towards the main thoroughfare where places of business were lined up all along the street. Muggles were bustling to and fro, carrying parcels into the local post office to be delivered by a postman, ordering bouquets of flowers from the local florist, and carrying sacks of groceries out of the neighborhood grocer’s market. When Lupin eyed the market, he silently motioned to Genevieve to follow him inside. They waited until a short woman in a striped dress pushed the door open and crept in behind her.

The market was fairly busy. The woman in the striped dress made her way to the butcher’s counter and began placing her meat order. In each aisle, several Muggles carried shopping baskets and were dutifully packing their foodstuffs into them as they consulted their shopping lists for the next item. Lupin and Genevieve waited anxiously as an aisle finally cleared and took the opportunity to snatch a few provisions.

“We’re common criminals now,” said Genevieve woefully, in a hushed tone.

“Pretty much,” said Lupin quietly, stuffing a canned good into his pocket.

When they had all the food they could carry, they snuck towards the exit, only just missing the display of boxed crackers that stood precariously at the front of the store – Genevieve’s arm had brushed it and it had teetered perilously, but fortunately did not tumble. As they waited for a Muggle to exit the market so that they could follow behind, they overheard the cashier making comments to a customer.

“No, Amaryllis,” the cashier was saying, “I heard there’s some escaped mental patient on the loose. And she’s got some vicious killer of a boyfriend with her. Very dangerous is what I hear. It was just reported on the television.”

The woman named Amaryllis shook her head dolefully. “There’s a load of sickos out there these days, aren’t there?” She grabbed the hand of a small boy who was standing beside her, picking at a scab. “Come on, William. Time to go home – and lock the doors up tight!”

Amaryllis and small William made their way out of the grocer’s market and Lupin and Genevieve followed. Genevieve was doing her best to keep from hissing at the woman that she was not a mental patient, nor was Lupin a vicious killer.

Lupin started to lead them back out of the village and towards the edge of the woods.

“Why are we going back in there?” asked Genevieve nervously.

“Only to rest a bit and eat,” Lupin assured her. She was looking tense at the prospect of venturing back into the woods. He settled them down a few meters into the forest, where a patch of sycamores concealed them from anyone who might venture up the path from the village. “We can take this off just for a little while,” he said as he pulled the cloak off of them.

Genevieve breathed in the fresh air deeply. Lupin took out his wand to open the canned goods they’d pilfered from the market. He magically made a fire and heated the contents, then offered some to Genevieve.

“Not quite as good as the house-elves, but it’ll suffice,” said Lupin with a half-grin.

Genevieve ate the food gratefully and felt much better after her stomach was full.

“What are we going to do?” she sighed. “Apparently even the Muggles are on the lookout for us.”

Lupin sat quietly and didn’t answer Genevieve’s question. He was very concerned about the people who were after them and it made him even more anxious now that he knew that Muggles were watching out for them as well, but there was one bigger concern looming over him like shadow – in a few days time, the moon would be full again. He had no Wolfsbane Potion with him to take that would ensure his passiveness and there was no way to get any. If he transformed and was anywhere near humans when he did, he could very well become the vicious killer the ladies in the market were so fearful of.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART FORTY-ONE:

“Where are we going to stay tonight?” asked Genevieve after she’d finished eating.

Lupin motioned past the ridge, beyond the path that led to the village, where another path, less trodden and overgrown with weeds and wild flowers, led towards a lodge with a ramshackle shed built off to the side. “I know it’s not the finest of accommodations to offer a lady, but I was thinking that little shed.”

“And will we move on in the morning?” asked Genevieve curiously.

Lupin hesitated for a moment. “I don’t know whether we should, until – after.”

“After the full moon, you mean?”

He nodded.

“You’re worried, aren’t you?” The drawn look on his face was very telling. “Why don’t you just apparate back to Hogwarts, use the cloak and get some of that potion you need? Leave me here for the time being. I’ll be fine.”

“I’ve considered that,” said Lupin slowly. “But going back isn’t without risks, even if I do have this cloak. If anyone found out about Snape’s involvement in this little catastrophe, he’s already in hot water. All he’d need is for me to come waltzing in, demanding some Wolfsbane Potion to make matters worse. And if they don’t know about his connection, I owe it to him not to leave a breadcrumb trail right to his office door.”

“He was a willing participant in all of this,” Genevieve said. “I mean, the man orchestrated the whole thing!”

“But I was careless,” Lupin said doggedly. “I should have known better.”

“You regret coming,” said Genevieve glumly.

“Not in the least,” replied Lupin. “I regret getting caught.” He grinned at her and squeezed her hands.

“Well, that still leaves us with your predicament. What are you going to do the night of the full moon?”

“I have a plan. It may not be a great one, but it’s all I’ve got,” said Lupin, heaving a deep sigh. “When we were coming through these woods earlier, I noticed a grotto, about a kilometer and a half before we came to this clearing.”

Genevieve looked at him expectantly.

“The evening before the full moon rises, we’ll walk to the grotto, I’ll conjure some restraints and you’ll shackle me, preventing my getting loose into the village during the night. As soon as I’m bound, I want you to take the invisibility cloak and hide back in the shed until morning. Then it’ll be safe to release me and hopefully, we’ll be able to move on afterwards.”

*****

The two found the shed near the lodge to be an adequate shelter. They pinched some more provisions from the market and even found Lupin some satisfactory Muggle attire from a bin of cast-offs at the Ladies’ Guild rummage sale in the village square.

“I wonder which sentence we’ll carry out first?” asked Genevieve jokingly as she stashed some of the stolen food on a shelf in the shed. “The one in Azkaban for breaking every law regarding proper werewolf conduct or the one in Muggle prison for nicking all this food and clothing?”

That evening, Genevieve decided to practice some of her memory-retrieval exercises that Dr. Montgomery had shown her. Lupin watched as she chanted a simple spell, over and over, and slowly slipped into a trance. Her eyes had rolled carelessly back into her head and her face went limp, as if she were in a drunken stupor.

*****

Images slowly crept back into Genevieve’s mind – familiar images. But they came so leisurely, as if she had all the time in the world to wait for them. The mediwizard had told her, the memories were fickle. If she tried to hurry them, they would become stubborn and go away all together. It was best to let them take their sluggish pace and receive them all in good time – much better than trying to rush them and have them be inconsistent.

So she was patient. She tolerated viewing her memories as if they were a video being played in slow motion for her.

Relaxing in the shed wasn’t as difficult as she thought it might have been, but after all, she did have Remus there by her side. At St. Mungo’s she’d had a special potion to drink to relax her mind – a purplish-blue concoction that smelled strongly floral. Dr. Montgomery had told her the flowery scent was because of the violets, which were added simply for color.

More scenes of her childhood passed – a piano recital, falling from her bicycle and breaking her arm, her first crush at the age of ten, an owl delivering a letter to her house the following year.

*****

She jerked her head out of the trance.

“What was it?” asked Lupin eagerly. “You’ve been in a daze for hours now!”

“I just remembered …” she looked at him excitedly.

“Remembered what?” he inquired impatiently.

“Being accepted to Hogwarts,” she said matter-of-factly. Her face suddenly fell. “And my parents refusing to allow me to go.”

“You’re getting closer,” said Lupin encouragingly. “Tomorrow you can try to remember more, but for now, I think you need to get some rest. You look exhausted.”

“I am,” she agreed. She nuzzled in beside where he sat on the floor of the shed, closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART FORTY-TWO:

The day of the full moon had come at last and Genevieve sat on the floor of the shed, legs crossed, trying to slip into a trance, but without much success. She thought she’d feel less overwrought by the impending adventure that awaited her that evening by keeping busy. The only trouble was, her tensions were keeping her from achieving the state of tranquility she so desperately needed in order to attain a proper trance.

She threw up her hands in desperation. “This is a vicious circle!”

Lupin, who had been scanning the grounds of the lodge through the small shed window for activity, turned to her and gave her a sympathetic smile. “Take a deep breath and try again. This time, close your eyes and focus. Don’t think about where you are or what’s going on around you. Just focus on your goal.”

“All right,” said Genevieve. “Focusing on my goal.” She clamped her eyelids shut and cleared her mind. She began to mutter the spell. Relentlessly she repeated the phrase, fighting to keep her mind clear, but it was difficult. Occasionally she fought to repress a recurring image – an image from that dream she’d had kept popping back – there she was, dancing in the moonlight with Lupin and suddenly, she was scooped up by the boughs of the tree and Lupin disappeared. Go away, she thought, telling the images to depart. They weren’t real memories anyhow – Lupin had told her so and she didn’t want to lose her focus by thinking about them.

Here we go, thought Genevieve. The images were gone and she felt herself gliding into a daze. Memories started to seep into her brain – a veritable profusion of recollections – but they were coming too fast. This isn’t right, she thought, panicking. The pacing was all wrong. The memories sped by so fast, she could hardly take them in and then, quite abruptly, they stopped – a traffic jam of thoughts clogged her head and she sharply awakened from the trance, clutching her forehead in pain.

“Owww,” she moaned as her head throbbed with a migraine-like soreness. “That was no good.”

“What happened?” asked Lupin compassionately.

“It’s no use trying this today,” she sighed. “I just can’t relax.” She didn’t want to tell him, but she was quite fearful that her failure had set the tone for what might happen the rest of the day and night. It’s a sign, she thought. An indication of how this day could end up – disastrous.

*****

Regrettably, Genevieve’s instincts proved to be correct, at least as far as the afternoon’s events had gone. While taking a trip into the village for some more supplies, Lupin had overheard a group of women talking in the market. Bizarre reports from the Ladies’ Guild rummage sale had gotten some of the villagers in an uproar and an assemblage of the townsfolk would be getting together to search the outskirts of the village, including areas of the woods. The most disturbing news was that the lodge keeper had reported hearing suspicious sounds from his shed. Lupin knew it was no longer safe to stay there, so he gathered what they could carry and led Genevieve into the woods, towards the grotto.

“We can lay low there until dusk,” he had said. “I doubt the villagers will search that deeply into the forest. The deeper they go, the more the Muggles want to turn back – it’s a safety precaution set up to keep them away from St. Mungo’s.”

Once in the grotto, Genevieve looked at Lupin solemnly and asked, “Where will I go tonight – once you … change – I can’t stay here, can I?”

“We have no choice,” he said. “You can’t go back – that lodge keeper will be snooping around.”

“But I can’t really stay here, though – how can I stay here if …”

“I’ll give you my wand. You can put a stunner on me if I get loose.”

“No,” said Genevieve nervously. “I can’t – I can’t remember how!”

“It’s simple,” said Lupin. “I’ll show you. And you’ll have to promise to stay in the farthest corner of this cave – away from me, unless you have to stun me. Now let’s practice – it goes like this.”

He aimed his wand at a toad that had happened along into the shadows of the grotto and said, “ Stupefy!” The toad, with a look of profound bewilderment on his toady face, paused and sat inanimate.

“ Ennervate!” Lupin called again and the toad’s features became animated once more as he hopped away, though somewhat disoriented. “Now you try,” he said as he handed Genevieve the wand. “There’s a salamander.”

Genevieve fretfully held the wand, aimed it at the salamander and recited the hex. The salamander’s motions were suspended as it stood silently and still, with its moist skin glistening in the beams of sunshine that peeked through the trees into the opening of the cavern. She repeated the counter-curse and the little newt scampered off in the direction the toad had gone.

“You’ve got it,” said Lupin in a satisfied voice. “I don’t want you to put this wand down through the night. You'll need to stay awake – and be alert.”

“I don’t think we’ll have a problem with that,” said Genevieve, as she gave a nervous chuckle.

The rest of the afternoon melted away and the evening hours hung around with a tension that was so thick, Genevieve could feel it in her bones. By the time dusk rolled around, the slightest noise from within the forest caused her to jump. As nightfall settled in and twilight advanced over the woodlands, Lupin readied his wand and conjured some heavy shackles.

“It’s time to put these on me,” he said matter-of-factly.

Genevieve was hesitant. “Are they really necessary?” she asked, eyeing the iron chains and weighty manacles. “Couldn’t I just use the stunner on you after you transform and unstun you in the morning?” She gave him a hopeful look.

“No,” he said. “What if something goes wrong and I attack you? I won’t take that risk. The stunner is reserved for an emergency only!”

“OK,” she said reluctantly as she heaved the shackles up and prepared to bind him. She paused and dropped them, then threw her arms around his neck. Squeezing him until he almost gasped for breath, she sniveled for a moment, and then released him. With a trembling voice, she said, “I just had to do that before …”

She looked down at the restraints desolately and then finally picked them up again and fastened them around his wrists and ankles. She hauled the heavy chain over and restrained his body by fastening it around a large boulder that opportunely lay a few feet inside the grotto.

“Can you get loose?” she asked, shaking the chain, checking for security.

He tugged and yanked, but he appeared to be bound firmly to the rock. “I think not,” he chuckled. “Let’s hope that’s still the case in a little while.”

“Yes, let's hope!,” Genevieve exclaimed anxiously.

She gulped as she looked out of the opening to the grotto. Twilight had passed and the night was establishing itself – the moon would be rising very soon. She knew she had only moments before the transformation would begin. She slipped her hands around his face and kissed him tenderly.

“See you in the morning,” she whispered.

Lupin’s gut began to wrench – the familiar feeling was upon him. “Go away,” he said firmly. “Back there – in the corner – go now!”

Genevieve backed away quickly and cringed into the corner. She wanted to hide her eyes, but the strange vision of Lupin’s contorting body grabbed her curiosity and she watched in morbid fascination. His face screwed up and then began to elongate – a snout was lengthening and growing. Hair grew rapidly and paws sprouted where his human hands and feet had been. When the transformation was complete, the newly formed wolf jerked and pulled at the chains, desperate to get free. He snarled, yelped and howled as he tried impulsively to free himself from the restraints. Genevieve sat huddled in the corner, clutching the wand timidly, should she have to use it.

After about an hour or two of listening to the wolf snarling and growling, Genevieve began to hear a new sound – human voices in the woods. The werewolf evidently heard them, too, and his focus was taken away from Genevieve, as he began to sniff the air in the direction of the cave opening – he could smell new humans approaching. He let out a piercing howl and the voices in the woods became louder. Genevieve could make out frantic expressions saying, “ Wolf! Wolf!”

The voices sounded young to Genevieve – like perhaps teenage boys. What are teenage boys doing prowling about the woods at night?, she thought. No doubt trying to be vigilantes and save the day. The voices receded and eventually died out all together, but Genevieve knew it wouldn’t be long before there was more trouble. And she didn’t have an inkling as to what to do when the trouble arrived. All she could do was wait.

*****

Back in the village, the four young men who had been searching through the forest reached the main road of the township and began to shout, “Wolf! Wolf! There’s a wolf in the woods!”

Minor pandemonium began to erupt as villagers and townsfolk started to emerge from the buildings and homes.

This pandemonium and chaos was enough to alert a certain agent of the Ministry of Magic who had been hiding out in the village since Ulysses Magnus had filed the report of the missing girl and her possible werewolf companion. The spy apparated immediately to the Ministry where a recovery team was assembled to apprehend the fugitives.

Within a half hour, the team had swooped down upon the grotto and apprehended Genevieve and the werewolf. As she was being dragged away, all Genevieve could picture was that tree from her dream grabbing her and holding her and as she looked around for Lupin, she saw nothing but a bunch of wizards lugging the limp wolf’s body behind her.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART FORTY-THREE:

“Diggory!” Ulysses Mangus’ voice boomed and practically shook the walls of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures office. “Have you contained that beast yet?”

“Calm down, Magnus,” said Amos Diggory unabashedly. “There’s no need to get nasty.”

“I call them like I see them,” the man replied. He folded his arms across his robust chest and scowled. “Now tell me … what’s going to be done about this situation? I say the harshest sentence allowed by the Ministry should be carried out – and swiftly.”

“Wait just a minute, Magnus,” said Diggory, shaking his head. “What proof do you have there was ever a werewolf in your facility? Did you see him?”

“Well – no – but …” Magnus stammered, his large chest heaving as he spoke.

“I realize he was with the girl when she was found, but if you have no proof …”

“If proof’s what you need, I’ll get you proof!” The words thundered from his mouth.

Amos Diggory picked up a quill and parchment and scribbled down Magnus’ statement. As he wrote, he said, “Well, until such time as you can actually produce this so-called proof, I feel obligated to let the man go – er, that is in the morning, when he actually is a man again,” he chortled.

Magnus was plainly not amused. “You’re releasing him?” he asked in disbelief.

“There’s no reason to detain him. He’s a registered werewolf. I’ll ask a few questions, but beyond that, he’ll be free to go.” He added a few more words to the parchment, and then rolled it up, looking satisfied. "I’ll just have Fudge sign this and we’ll be all squared away.”

“That’s what you think,” muttered Magnus under his breath.

“Did you say something?” asked Diggory suspiciously.

“Not a thing,” said Magnus gruffly. “Let’s get on to Fudge’s office, then.”

The two men used Floo powder to make the short trip to the Minister of Magic’s office. In the office sat Cornelius Fudge, Albus Dumbledore and Genevieve, who was looking particularly panicky at the moment. She avoided eye contact with all of the men, choosing instead to stare intently at her shoes.

“I’ve written up the report,” said Diggory as he handed the rolled parchment to Fudge. “Everything’s in order and unless the girl has anything to add, Remus Lupin can be released in the morning.” He looked over to Genevieve, who seemed particularly interested in her shoelaces at the moment.

“The girl hasn’t given us a statement as of yet,” said Fudge brusquely. “But now that we’re all assembled, I’m sure she’s ready to speak.”

Slowly, Genevieve lifted her head. She looked at Dumbledore, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and guilt.

“I just couldn’t stay there any more,” she said quietly, her voice faltering ever so slightly. “I missed Remus and wanted to leave.” Her eyes dodged contact with Dumbledore’s slightly as she told the half-truth.

“And did you leave with him?” Magnus interjected. “Did that beast come there and steal you away?"

“Settle down, Mr. Magnus,” said Dumbledore. “You run a hospital, not a prison. She wasn’t a captive there. Granted, it was poor judgment for her to leave in the middle of her treatment.” His eyes bore down on her and sent a fresh wave of shame straight through her. “Nevertheless, you can’t punish her for leaving.”

“When did you meet up with Lupin, if not at St. Mungo’s … eh, girl? When?”

“She doesn’t need to tell you anything more,” said Dumbledore, putting an arm around Genevieve. “What happened outside of your hospital is of no concern to you.” His blue eyes stared at him harshly. Magnus stood with his mouth shut at that. “If there’s nothing further, Minister, I’d like to take the girl back to Hogwarts with me.”

“I don’t what kind of trouble this professor of yours has been causing, Dumbledore, but I’m ready to wash my hands of it. If Diggory says it’s all in order, I see no reason to bother the Ministry with a wild goose chase. We’ve more important matters to deal with.”

Magnus’ mouth gaped. “But -- Minister …”

Fudge stopped him short. “Either produce adequate evidence or don’t take up any more of my time.”

With that, Dumbledore and Genevieve took leave, departing for Hogwarts via the Floo Network and Amos Diggory followed suit, departing for his office.

Magnus stayed behind just long enough to say, “I’ll get you your evidence, Minister – you can count on that.”

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ...
