The Journey Matters

It is good to have an end to journey towards But is is the journey that matters in the end. —Le Guin

I have always been a reader of fiction – okay I consume it, but I remember back in high school, I picked up a work of non-fiction. It was called A Walk Across America – by Peter Jenkins.  It was the story of a young man in college in the 70’s who had become disenfranchised with life in America.  He made all these grandiose plans to flee the country and ride a motorcycle across Europe and other things.  Someone encouraged him to instead, take the time to get to know America before he gave up on his country.  Peter decided the only way to do this was to walk across America.  A Walk Across America is the story of his walk, and more important of his journey.  He figured it would take him a couple of months to walk from New York down to Louisiana (I think it was).  The walk ended up taking him several years because he took the time to actually meet people and experience different ways of life.  He made it a true journey.   I still have my original copy of A Walk Across America, and it’s sequel, The Walk West, and they’ve been read ragged because I never stop enjoying the journey, and it helps me to remember to enjoy my own journey.
