Devil to Pay Book Review: When Love, Fear, and Demons Collide
Are you going to like Devil to Pay by Christine Pope? Well, if you love paranormal romance with real emotional stakes, complicated relationships, and
just enough chaos to keep you flipping pages, then yes, yes you are.
This is not just a story about demons and angels or good and bad. It is about control, fear, identity, and what happens when love is tested under pressure, surveillance, and possible apocalypse. You know, normal relationship stuff.
A Relationship Under Pressure
At the heart of the story are Delia and Caleb, who are navigating far more than a growing relationship. Delia is torn between her independence and the expectations placed on her by her mother and career. Caleb, meanwhile, is struggling with the fear that he might become like his half-demon father, Daniel Lockwood.
Their dynamic works because it feels emotionally grounded. Miscommunication, hesitation, fear of commitment, and the need for control all shape their choices. Even with supernatural danger circling them, the relationship tension feels painfully human.
When the Stakes Get Personal
Things escalate quickly when Delia becomes pregnant, triggering both emotional and supernatural consequences. Her psychic abilities begin spiraling out of control, which mirrors her internal fear of losing control over her own life.
At the same time, outside forces begin to close in. Demons manipulate, surveil, and exploit the couple’s vulnerabilities, even using text messages to play on Delia’s insecurities. It is unsettling, effective, and a very modern kind of evil.
A Villain Worth Fearing
The return of Daniel Lockwood raises the stakes dramatically. No longer contained, he emerges more powerful and more dangerous, shifting from a personal threat to a potentially world-ending one.
His plan to open a permanent portal for demons adds urgency and scale, transforming the story from intimate conflict into something much larger. In a rather unironic twist of fate, he plans to do this on Halloween.
Action, Emotion, and a Battle in Vegas
A major confrontation at the Luxor brings the action to a dramatic peak. What makes the scene work is not only the supernatural spectacle, but the way Delia and Caleb combine their powers and prove they are stronger together. One thing I really liked about setting the big battle of Devil to Pay at the Luxor was the way Pope was able weave in mystical elements of pyramid magic into the book. It’s just a little detail, but it really makes the story so much richer.
That moment matters because their biggest problem has never been a lack of connection. It has been fear, trust, and communication. Tiny things, really. Just the emotional equivalent of juggling flaming swords.
A Cliffhanger That Hits
The novel closes with a clear setup for what comes next, sending Caleb and Ty to Santa Fe in search of a weapon powerful enough to face the looming
threat. One of my favorite things about Christine’s books are when characters from other books pop up in a new book. And while the characters didn’t pop up YET, I imagine they’ll be forthcoming. For me, that is the magic that makes the books just so much better.
It is not a tidy ending, and it is not meant to be. Instead, it expands the world, connects to a larger universe, and leaves readers very ready for the next installment.
Final Thoughts
The Devil to Pay is a strong blend of paranormal romance and supernatural suspense. It balances emotional depth with fast-paced action, giving readers both character-driven conflict and high-stakes danger. But it also has the trials and tribulations faced by regular people, and that’s what makes them so real. If you enjoy stories where love is tested by fear, where internal battles matter just as much as external ones, and where the supernatural feels deeply personal, this book is well worth your time.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Because honestly? That ending had me ready to throw my Kindle and immediately look for the next book. Okay but really it’s 5 stars but there were some serious rage feelings going on when I got to the end!
